What a cap keeps out

Rain and snow

Everything that lands on your roof lands in the flue. It sits on the smoke shelf and the damper. It soaks into the clay tiles and the masonry from the inside.

Birds, squirrels and raccoons

A warm, sheltered shaft is close to perfect nesting habitat. Chimney swifts, starlings, squirrels and raccoons all use them.

A nest blocks the flue. That pushes smoke and carbon monoxide back into your house. The nesting material itself is dry and highly flammable, sitting directly above your firebox. Removing an established nest costs far more than the mesh that would have stopped it. The mesh sides act as an animal guard.

Leaves, twigs and seeds

Material, and what it costs

Galvanized caps cost the least and rust out first. In a wet climate that can be a short life. Stainless steel and copper cost more and last much longer.
